Flaneur
What is a flaneur?
An embrace of the streeets complexity and its layers and fragmentations. The literal meaning is "the lounger" or the "stroller." I interpret this as the average person expertiencing the city simply for the experience itself. "An ambivalent figure of the urban affluence and modernity."
I am reminded of a novella I recently read, Feminist City: A Fielf Guide. The author, Leslie Kern, talks about the modern charactewr that is the flaneur, and how they are often represented : a white affluent male. A quick google search of "Flaneur photography" coroberates this reading. How would we document those who are not white able bodied men in a flaneur fashion? Do we follow them for the day as Sophie Calle had?
